Our philosophy and approach

Build it simple, but significant.
— Don Draper, Mad Men
The most important thing is that you love what you are doing, and the second that you are not afraid of where your next idea will lead.
— Charles Eames, Architect
I think of architecture as a piece of clothing to wrap around human beings.
— Toyo Ito, Architect

We love to design.

The word itself is exciting to us. It allows us to spend time dreaming and exploring the possibilities of what can be, rather than what is. Call it what you will . . . . escapism, daydreaming, optimism, hypothesizing, or a host of other similar descriptions . . . but we can loose ourselves in our work for hours, and we don’t see that as a bad thing.

How we approach our work.

Our clients take center stage. Nothing honestly makes us happier than when we hear from clients long after a project is completed, and they describe that something we designed, discussed and agonized over together has become a moment of pure joy in their daily lives. The way the first light of dawn shines into their bedroom welcoming a new day, the placement of the kitchen window overlooking their children playing in the backyard, or having just the right amount of storage in all of the right places are seemingly benign events, but they truly mean the world us. No decision is small, and every choice has the possibility to enhance and support daily life. In our world, architecture matters everyday, and everyday architecture matters.

Why we keep practicing our craft.

Part art, part science. Architecture is a beautifully complex discipline, providing challenges and daily opportunity for growth. The combination of art and science, we understand good architecture to rest somewhere in between. Although artistic pursuit is what drives most architects, there is also an inherent satisfaction in solving the technical aspects of our profession well. Very simply, being architects allows us to tap into both our left- and right-brained selves consistently, allowing us a path for continuous growth and life-long learning.

Our architectural style.

Personalized, client-centric and versatile. If you’ve looked through our portfolio of work, you’ve most likely discovered that we don’t have a specific “style.” Instead, we draw inspiration from classic, contemporary and natural sources, reinterpreting them for modern living, translating our client’s dreams into fresh, imaginative and timeless buildings.

Change is good. Purposeful, thoughtful and intentional change is better.

We love a challenge, and are thrilled to be part of change . For us, there really truly is nothing worse than stagnation and complacency. As creatives, we are always looking at the world around us and contemplating how it can be improved for those who inhabit it. You name it — the doctor’s office, supermarket, the playground, restaurants, our home office — our wheels are always turning, evaluating what we see, and seeking paths for improvement.

We love to learn. And listen.

No two projects are the same. We understand that the way things have always been done isn’t the way things should always be done. We recognize that each and every client and project is different, each with its own unique set of challenges and goals. And, we want to hear all about your needs and aspirations so we can help you create what it is you have set out to achieve.

We love meeting new people.

Many of our clients become our friends. When you work as an architect on someone’s home, you get to know them on a truly personal level. You learn their deepest and most emotionally pure hopes for the environment that they are creating, and you sometimes discover more about them in the process than they knew about themselves before they started on the collaborative journey. We consider it a privilege to work with a wide array of interesting souls, who continuously afford us the opportunity to make a living doing the work we love. And, for that, we couldn’t be more grateful.

Two minds are better than one.

On collaboration with your spouse. Spoiler alert — we don’t always agree, and have discovered that that’s okay. We’ve uncovered a professional synergy and a willingness to push each other towards better solutions for our clients daily. Built on a relationship of mutual trust and respect, we thrive on our collaboration, and realized long ago that professionally, as in our personal life, we are better together than we are apart.
